THAT is the miracle and magic, for which Limen Recovery + Wellness is directly responsible, in helping me, along with my HP to obtain, one day at a time, to present. It is a direct result of learning, and then, putting into practice, a program of action, shown to me, by my first sober support network- the counselors, alumni, friends of and fellow residents of Limen Recovery + Wellness. How do I put a lifetime of ‘thank yous’ owed to these countless agents, in a few short paragraphs? In true Limen fashion, of course- GRATITUDE! Limen taught me that gratitude is an action word, so I take action, and put my hand out to the next sick and suffering, to give back what was so freely give to me. My story is not unique. I started to experiment with alcohol and other substances, for the effect produced—or as I now know it to be, change of perception– anything to escape my ideas and feelings of ‘self’, I was down to do, and I did. I took the drink, and the drink eventually took me. My progression was so distorted by denial and delusion, I was no longer capable of distinguishing my truths from reality. Fast forward 30yrs, I wanted the pain and consequences to stop. After the fog started lifting in rehab, I had a moment of clarity, and admitted to my GOD and myself, that I had no clue how to live sober. When Limen was suggested, I wholeheartedly took it– after all, my family was in no hurry to see me return home. I was as desperate as the dying can be, to stay ‘stopped’, so I made a conscience decision to become honest, open-minded and willing to do the next right thing. Limen became my safe haven, living in community with women doing the same thing I was—trying to get another day. Selfcare started with keeping in a routine, or conditioning, of getting up in the morning, proper nutrition, showering and keeping clean clothes. Immediately followed by prayer and meditation, along with daily meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous, I would begin to master the ordinary. Limen afforded me the small disciplines that would, one day, make the BIGGEST rule, for THIS alcoholic, attainable— I became able, one day at a time, to no longer “but the lie”, that I can drink safely, sanely and socially. The counselors in Limen Recovery + Wellness loved me until I felt worthy of loving myself. Through self-examination, honest appraisal, identifying behaviors, and adopting new ideas and attitudes, I learned acceptance, and started to clean up the wreckage of my past. I would be saturated in the Program of AA, and work with a sponsor, who has shown me how to stay right where my feet are, to remain present. To say that my... --- ### Doug - **URL:** https://www.limenrecovery.org/doug/ - **Published:** 2023-08-09 - **Modified:** 2023-08-09 - **Author:** Limen Recovery + Wellness **Categories:** Alumni Stories When I walked into Limen Recovery and Wellness, I was hopeless, ashamed, and filled with guilt. I had multiple attempts at recovery and a long list of institutions under my belt. I should have had a degree in self-sabotage. Limen taught me that it’s okay to not be okay at times. The treatment and therapy they gave helped me begin the healing process. They helped me find my voice and the ability to stand up for my beliefs so that I could grow spiritually, mentally, and physically. I started step work and got a sponsor during my stay. They introduced me to a wonderful fellowship and the other residents in the house became my brothers. This house opened their arms to me, and my time there helped reunite my family. I found gratitude in daily life that I never felt when I was under the influence. I learned a routine that allows me to grow and no matter what happens, I never have to use substances to get through it. Limen Recovery and Wellness gave me the tools I need to start my life over. --- ### McKenna - **URL:** https://www.limenrecovery.org/mckenna/ - **Published:** 2023-07-09 - **Modified:** 2023-09-29 - **Author:** Limen Recovery + Wellness **Categories:** Alumni Stories Growing up, I’d always felt different. I never felt that I was “a part of,” no matter how hard I tried. I tried doing team sports, playing the guitar, dressing in clothes that I thought other people would like on me rather than what I felt comfortable in… I had all these masks that I would put on just to try and fit in but none of them ever worked. I was so driven by fear in every single aspect of my life and it was crippling. I lived in this cage in my mind for so long until relief came in the form of my first drink at around 14 years old. That drink turned into multiple drinks that night, and I had found what I’d been searching for my whole life: absolute freedom. I could finally breathe out. For the first time in my life, I felt that I could socialize, be funny, dance, and be someone that people actually liked. The fear of being myself had vanished, and I knew that I had found a solution. When I went off to college, my life really started to spiral out of control. I had found my tribe there, a group of people who drank like I did, and I was off to the races. I had arrived. I was partying every single night, rarely attending class, and if I did attend class I was either high or drunk going into it. I was also in a really abusive relationship at this time. Friends and family would always ask me “Why are you still with him?” and the answer was simple: he provided me drugs and alcohol. That was my motivation for staying in that relationship for as long as I did. I knew that regardless of what happened to me, I had those two things to get me through it. Then I got kicked out of school as a direct result of my drinking and drugging, and I was still in denial. I genuinely didn’t think I had a problem. It didn’t take long for me to become a slave to my addiction, especially once heroin came into the picture. I lived to use and used to live. I could not function for even a moment being sober. I was no longer using for a sense of freedom, but for complete and total oblivion. I didn’t care who I hurt or what I had to do in order to get the next one because I no longer had a choice in the matter. Nothing was out of the question. My family, friends, and co-workers started to notice. It didn’t matter how many times they begged and pleaded with me to stop. I couldn’t. Not on my own will power. The first time I went to rehab, I had no real desire to get sober. From there I went to an Oxford house, and for a short time the only thing I wasn’t doing was using. I wasn’t working... --- ### Maintaining Healthy Relationships in Sobriety - **URL:** https://www.limenrecovery.org/maintaining-healthy-relationships-in-sobriety/ - **Published:** 2023-02-23 - **Modified:** 2025-04-28 - **Author:** Michael Duffy **Categories:** News **Excerpt:** Maintaining a strong network of sober friends is an essential part of recovery from addiction. Father Martin compared recovery for an alcoholic to how the first breath of air would feel for someone who almost drowned. A large part of the relief we find after coming into the rooms are bonds we form with others in recovery after emerging from extended periods of isolation. Maintaining a strong network of sober friends is an essential part of recovery from addiction. A supportive community can provide the encouragement, motivation, and accountability necessary to stay on the path to sobriety. Building and maintaining a network of sober friends can be a challenge, especially for those who are new. In this blog, we will explore some tips and strategies to help grow a network of sober friends. With the right approach, anyone can create and maintain healthy relationships, and take an important leap toward a successful and lasting recovery. Here are some steps you can take that will ensure you have the best chance for long-term recovery: Attend Meetings Regularly Attend 12-step meetings such as AA or NA regularly to build relationships with others in recovery. Meetings provide a safe space to share your experiences, listen to others, and build meaningful connections with people who are walking the same path as you. Get Involved in a Sober Community Get involved in your sober community by participating in activities, volunteering, or joining a sober sports team. These activities provide opportunities to meet like-minded people who are committed to their recovery and provide a supportive environment. Getting a Sponsor Seek out a sponsor (Mentor) who has been sober for several years and has the experience and wisdom to guide you through your recovery journey. A mentor can provide guidance, motivation, and support and can help you develop a strong network of sober friends. Stay Connected with Sober Friends Stay connected with sober friends through regular phone calls, texts, or in-person visits. This will help you stay accountable and provide a safety net when you need it. Be Open and Honest with Your Sober Friends Be open and honest with your sober friends about your struggles, your successes, and your setbacks. It’s ok to be vulnerable when you are feeling down. It will help build stronger relationships with supportive friends who are there for you when you need them. Avoid High-Risk Situations Avoid high-risk situations that could trigger a relapse, such as going to bars, parties, or other social events where alcohol or drugs are readily available. Instead, seek out sober events and activities that provide a positive environment for your recovery. I wouldn’t be sober today if not for the friendships I formed in early recovery. Many of us still stay in touch with each other over 20 years later. Something happens when a group is working together to fight a common enemy. We became stronger together! Whether your attending meetings, volunteering, or participating in events, it is important to stay connected and involved to maintain the strength it takes to accept life on life’s terms. By implementing steps like these... --- ### The Disease Concept - **URL:** https://www.limenrecovery.org/the-disease-concept/ - **Published:** 2022-04-11 - **Modified:** 2025-04-28 - **Author:** Michael Duffy **Categories:** News Why can’t they just stop using drugs and alcohol? For many generations, the stigma associated with addiction is that they don’t want to stop. Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is defined as a disease by the American Medical Association and the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). Yet, many people still think that it’s possible for someone suffering with these disorders to stop on their own. While this may be true for some patients, we are talking about the cases who, at one time in history, would have been considered hopeless. The alcoholics and addicts who have been to several jails, treatment facilities, and institutions but still cannot find the ability to change. The truth is, they are probably just as confused as you are as to why they cannot stop. Many of them have no idea what they are suffering from. What they do know is they cannot control their drinking. Why is acceptance of the disease concept so difficult? This misunderstanding is what makes addiction one of the deadliest diseases. Addiction is caused by a combination of behavioral, psychological, and biological components, much like diabetes or heart disease. Over time, addiction alters the functioning of the brain and body and can cause both physical and mental health disorders. ASAM released this short definition of addiction in 2011: “Addiction is a primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory, and related circuitry.” Those of us who have struggled with SUD have an abnormal reaction to substances. Our brain chemistry reacts differently when substances enter our body than those who do not have this disease. Upon ingesting the first drink or drug, an abnormal or allergic reaction causes a physiological craving in the individual that cannot be controlled. Many of us can think of nothing else once this craving is triggered, leading to mental obsession. Further, we have a mind that will lead us back to a drink, even after long periods of abstinence. Thus, addiction affects both mental and physical health. In the rooms of Narcotics and Alcoholics Anonymous, they say, “One is too many, and 1000 is never enough.” Truer words have never been spoken. Understanding the Disease Concept Many addicts and alcoholics struggle with understanding the disease concept, even after experiencing the mental obsession firsthand as described above. Addiction is the only disease that place’s fault on the person suffering from it. The actions of addicts and alcoholics can cause their friends and family to suffer right along with them. Eventually, even those closest to them can give up hope that their loved one might recover. It takes a lot of work, but addicts and alcoholics can ultimately discover that they are not bad people. Instead, they can come to understand that they are mentally, physically, and spiritually sick, and the disease of addiction has robbed them of any choice they had to say no. When those with SUD accept the reality of the disease concept, they can begin to forgive themselves for the things they have done... --- ### Addiction and COVID-19 - **URL:** https://www.limenrecovery.org/addiction-and-covid-19/ - **Published:** 2021-09-09 - **Modified:** 2025-04-28 - **Author:** Michael Duffy **Categories:** News The number of overdoses and alcohol-related deaths has had a massive increase during the COVID19 pandemic. Over 40 states have reported increases in opiate overdoses and other drug-related deaths during the last year. Delaware is no different, rising to second in the nation per capita since 2019 (CDC, 2019). We have more treatment facilities and government funding now than ever before, but it does not seem to be slowing the growth of the opioid epidemic. You may be wondering why the quarantine has hit the recovery community so hard. Although, there is no simple medical explanation, those of us who have struggled with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) understand. They say “we are only as sick as our secrets” and addicts have a lot of them. I have heard Substance Use Disorder (SUD) referred to as “a disease of the darkness.” The only way to overcome darkness is to bring it into the light. Members familiar with the Twelve Steps know that Step Four is one of the most important steps because it involves the sharing of your secrets with another recovering alcoholic or addict. This step involves a rigorous inventory of one’s actions, fears, and resentments. Unless someone has endured enough pain, the thought of looking inside themselves seems unnecessary and pointless. Not surprisingly, this is where many stop working in their process, potentially setting them on a path toward a relapse. This is an act of redemption that has spanned thousands of years and reached almost every major religion in history, including the Christians and Buddhists. Once our secrets are out in the open, they can no longer cause the shame and guilt that comes from holding them in. Walking up to our first meeting, tense and afraid, we see smiles and hear laughter. Instantly, we want to be a part of that infectious happiness. Someone says they are going out for coffee after the meeting and we tag along. Most of us spent years isolated in our addiction, with our doors locked and the shades drawn, and the connection with others is the first thing that lights our hearts in recovery. The fellowship is what makes this thing attractive to those seeking a better life. Finding a group of people who understand our feelings can be like the first breath of fresh air we have ever taken. The longer we keep coming, the more friends we make. At some point, someone mentions working the Twelve Steps to us and we are more than willing to continue this process. The quarantine changed our way of life in an instant. Suddenly, there were no coffee shops or meetings to attend. Both the recovery community and people coming out of rehabs or detoxes looking to attend their first meeting could not. That same connection that brought us back to life is what we lost during COVID-19. The effects of isolation can cause severe depression in someone that is also suffering from SUD. The lack of interaction and recreation has been tough... --- ### The Limen Recovery + Wellness Difference - **URL:** https://www.limenrecovery.org/the-limen-recovery-wellness-difference/ - **Published:** 2020-04-14 - **Modified:** 2025-04-28 - **Author:** Michael Duffy **Categories:** News Many people in the recovery community are aware of the successful program we run at Limen Recovery + Wellness. We not only provide a supportive and stable environment, but our tough love and structured approach takes treatment one step further. The purpose of this blog is to share a little about our methods. The minds of people in early recovery tend to work overtime trying to figure out how to fix the mess they have made. False beliefs of rebuilding their life before dealing with the core issue can cause addicts and alcoholics to eventually relapse. In our 50+ years of treating addiction, we have learned that sitting still and slowing down the racing thoughts are the only ways to combat the addict's mind. It is in the stillness that most find they have the power to face and overcome the feelings they have been avoiding. At Limen Recovery + Wellness we try to break down the ego and fill that space with self-esteem. Getting and staying clean involves a complete overhaul of the person you once were. This means, in many cases, doing the exact opposite of what the brain is telling you is a “good idea.” When an addict first gets sober, the disease can manifest itself through obsessive behaviors. We try to redirect the resident from old daily habits to a healthier way of thinking. For example, if we see residents displaying laziness, we will have them work out at the gym a few days a week. In the same instance, if we see a resident using exercise as a major focal point, the privilege of going to the gym is taken away. The idea is to keep them out of their comfort zone and get them to experience different aspects of life, in moderation. During their time at Limen Recovery + Wellness, residents must attend two Twelve Step recovery meetings a day and incorporate the Twelve Step recovery model into their lives. Our program has no set time limit, so our residents have the time to choose the right sponsor and be as thorough as possible when completing their step work. The process of relapse can begin with any line of unhealthy thinking, especially the loss of gratitude. That is why we teach that gratitude is an action word. It moves beyond saying, “I am grateful” and brings it to, “What am I doing to show it?” You can only fight a disease of selfish thinking with selfless acts of kindness, so residents are reminded to ask themselves, “Am I helping out housemates when asked, or cleaning up my mess when no one is there to see?” It is also important for us to help them see through their denial. When an addict accumulates clean time and is no longer in physical pain, the mind can forget how bad life was before sobriety. It is our job to prepare them for daily living outside the walls of Limen Recovery + Wellness and we take that seriously.... --- ### A Family Disease - **URL:** https://www.limenrecovery.org/a-family-disease/ - **Published:** 2020-02-10 - **Modified:** 2023-08-04 - **Author:** Michael Duffy **Categories:** News With the current opioid crisis invading the homes of families worldwide, chances are many have had some experience with a friend or loved one who is struggling with the disease of addiction. We have seen and felt the devastating pain endured by the family of an addict way more than we would like. Despair, guilt, and shame leading to anxiety, isolation, and depression. Overwhelming feelings of helplessness take hold while watching someone they love anguished, and as so many lives are lost to this disease, they live day to day with that constant gut-wrenching fear that their parent, child, sibling, spouse or friend will not survive. Terrified that they will become another tragic statistic. Many family members cut off the addict to protect themselves from emotional turmoil, and while this approach is more than likely the best, in some situations, separation from the addict might not be possible. Therefore, education about the disease and learning that there is recovery from it, both for them and the addict is a very powerful tool. Learning that they didn’t cause the disease nor can they control it or cure it (the 3 C’s of Al-Anon) can be freeing and lead to a path of recovery for them regardless of whether the addict/alcoholic seeks help for themselves. There is so much information available on the internet, at counseling centers and any 12 Step meeting. The most important thing is to remember is that you are not alone. There are more people affected by the disease of addiction than there are actual addicts. Education will also prepare loved ones should the day come when the addict reaches out for help. At Limen Recovery + Wellness, we have witnessed so many miracles. People become so tired of living in pain they become willing to try any means of treatment necessary to make it stop. When someone finally admits they are truly powerless over their addiction, and that their lives have become unmanageable, we call this Step 1. This gift of desperation is a key factor in the ability of an addict or alcoholic to recover. They too learn that they are not alone and that their shame and pain are not unique. With the help of counselors, 12 Step meetings, painful honesty and a belief in a higher power, recovery of the addict, as well as the family unit as a whole can progress. Relationships start to strengthen as self-esteem is established and trust is regained. The path is not easy but it is certainly worth it. Addicts are not bad people, they are sick people and the stigma associated with addiction is dissipating as society begins to recognize this. Many of them are suffering from underlying trauma or mental health issues such as depression or bipolar disorder. Diagnosis and treatment are vital to their recovery. Because a storm is raging, recovery is becoming an extremely popular topic both locally and nationally. Too many lives have been lost to this deadly disease and people are noticing.... --- ## Pages ### Careers - **URL:** https://www.limenrecovery.org/careers/ - **Published:** 2025-02-11 - **Modified:** 2025-02-11 - **Author:** Ann Premazon Careers Limen Recovery + Wellness is an equal opportunity employer. Limen Recovery intensive outpatient program (IOP) offers just that. This flexible and effective approach to treatment allows you to maintain your daily responsibilities while receiving the support you need to overcome addiction. [elementor-template id="671"] The Benefits of Limen Recovery Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) At the heart of our intensive outpatient program is compassionate support of recovery and growing personal responsibility. Our holistic framework allows our IOP patients and residents time to sit with themselves and a multidisciplinary team of peer supports, addiction counselors, and in-house physician. Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) provide a balanced approach to treatment and life, with components such as group therapy sessions, individual counseling, and complementary therapies. IOPs offer increased flexibility, cost-effectiveness & a structured environment for individuals seeking addiction recovery. Finding the right IOP facility is essential for successful recovery & can be done by consulting your doctor or searching online directories/websites specializing in addiction treatment centers. Understanding Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) offer a flexible and effective treatment option for individuals struggling with addiction or mental health issues, without requiring full-time residential care. An intensive outpatient program IOP bridges the gap between inpatient treatment and standard outpatient therapy by providing a higher level of care and support at an inpatient treatment facility, while still allowing patients to maintain their family or work commitments. IOPs have gained increasing recognition as a valuable alternative to residential treatment programs, often providing comparable treatment outcomes at a more affordable price. An IOP typically combines various treatment modalities, such as group therapy, individual counseling, and complementary therapies, to create a comprehensive and personalized treatment plan. This level of care is ideal for individuals who do not require the structured environment of a residential or inpatient setting but still need more support than traditional outpatient therapy can provide. National Institutes of Health (NIH) research indicates that IOPs can be just as effective as inpatient care in addressing addiction recovery.Participation in an IOP provides individuals with access to early intervention services, support groups, and a variety of mental health services and treatment programs designed to meet their specific needs. Treatment centers offering IOPs can also provide treatment services such as a partial hospitalization program, psychiatric hospital care, and addiction medicine services, depending on the severity and complexity of the individual's condition. Components of IOPs: Balancing Treatment and Life Intensive outpatient treatment expertly balances treatment and life by incorporating various components such as group therapy, individual counseling, and complementary therapies. This allows patients to maintain their daily responsibilities while receiving the support they need for a successful recovery through outpatient treatment in the form of intensive outpatient programs. The subsequent sections will provide a detailed examination of these components and their contribution to a comprehensive treatment plan. Group Therapy Sessions Group therapy sessions in IOPs provide a supportive environment where individuals in recovery can share their experiences, build a sense of community, and learn from one another. These sessions typically focus on a range of topics, such as coping strategies, relapse prevention, and communication skills. Some IOPs may also offer specialized groups tailored to specific populations, such as men or women, LGBTQ individuals, veterans, or sexual abuse survivors.Another unique aspect of group therapy in... --- ### Services - **URL:** https://www.limenrecovery.org/services/ - **Published:** 2023-08-03 - **Modified:** 2025-05-23 - **Author:** Limen Recovery + Wellness **Excerpt:** Limen Recovery and Wellness started its mission in 1969 as a place for people to recover. Today, those who have struggled and or managed to avoid fatal overdose must still find available recovery support, or they will eventually become part of these grim statistics. The population most at risk is the population served by Limen Recovery + Wellness - marginalized, the uninsured, and underinsured who most need services but cannot afford adequate recovery support. In our residential treatment programs, our residents have substance use disorders; all are unemployed, most are homeless, and many have legal, custody, and medical issues. Without recovery, people with substance use disorder continue at a very high risk for death. Expansion Limen Recovery + Wellness received a federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant in August 2022, allowing them to double their bed count and expand their services to include a Recovery Resource Center, Intensive Outpatient Program, and Level 3.1 ASAM (American Society for Addiction Medicine) treatment center. While the ARPA grant and private donations covered the purchase cost of the new location, Limen Recovery + Wellness is seeking financial investment to support the capacity building required to expand their evidence-based Limen Recovery Model to all levels of care.Limen Recovery + Wellness is Delaware's primary care mechanism for recovery services. The McConnell’s, Linda and Paul - generously donated $1,000,000 to secure the purchase of their 819 Washington Street location. The McConnell's involvement extends beyond financial support and flows from a sincere commitment to advance Limen and provide a real opportunity for recovery. Capital and endowment investments and gifts to the annual fund allow Limen Recovery + Wellness to fulfill its mission and seek ways to expand its efforts, impacting even more lives for years to come. In October 2023, Limen Recovery + Wellness partnered with the Peg Diehl Family Foundation, a significant milestone for the organization. Peg Diehl, one of the founders of Seabrook of New Jersey, was a pioneer and national leader in the recovery community and the treatment field. The word li'-men is a scientific term of Latin origin that means threshold, the place or point of entering or beginning; the point at which a physiological or psychological effect begins to be produced. Getting the endeavor off the ground took great effort. Collaborations with officials from the Alcoholic Commission, the Department of Mental Health, the Mental Health Association, Alcoholics Anonymous, and other community agencies existed to facilitate the rehabilitation of alcoholics. Four Sober Livings Limen Recovery + Wellness operates four separate recovery houses and an outpatient service. These houses are models for other halfway houses in Delaware and other states. Both our residence and outpatient’s success relies on the continual integration of best practices and our loving kindness, compassion, generosity, and forgiveness toward those struggling with addiction and mental illness. Human beings are valuable, unique, and vulnerable and deserve multiple chances. Our goal is to meet the people we serve where they are and to walk with them on their path to recovery. Our Sober Living Homes: Limen House and TRIAD Have Merged As of June 1, 2020, Limen House and TRIAD Addiction Recovery Services have merged into a single non-profit organization – Limen Recovery + Wellness. TRIAD Addiction Recovery Services, formally called Trinity Alcohol and Drug Program, was created as a church ministry as a center where those struggling with addiction could come for help when few other resources were available in the community. The merger allows Limen Recovery + Wellness to provide myriad benefits to Delaware’s recovery community, such as mental health support from an Outpatient program and clinical services to our residents at Limen sober living. --- ### Meet Our Team - **URL:** https://www.limenrecovery.org/about/meet-our-team/ - **Published:** 2023-08-03 - **Modified:** 2025-08-28 - **Author:** Limen Recovery + Wellness **Excerpt:** The Limen Recovery + Wellness team is the heart and soul of our daily commitment to those we treat.
